60th Street Reconstruction, City of West Allis

August 22, 2011
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during the reconstruction of S. 60th St. from National Ave. to the Henry Aaron Bike Trail to the north. On Wednesday, August 25, 2011, the contractor will be re-opening this section of the project to traffic.

While this section of the project will be open to traffic, the contractor will still be working in the area over the next several weeks to complete the following items:

  • Completion of the traffic signals at the intersection of Mineral St. and S. 60th St. Please exercise caution through this area as the traffic signal will not be operational for several weeks. Traffic on Mineral Street will be controlled by a stop sign, but please use extra caution in this area. When the traffic signals are made operational, they will be placed in a flashing operation for several days prior to being fully activated.
  • Completion of a retaining wall and the landscaping connected with the retaining wall from Walker St. to Pierce St. When this work is taking place, the contractor will close the northbound lane closest to the curb. Please be aware of traffic barrels and warning signs in this area.
  • Completion of the remaining sidewalk from Walker St. to the Henry Aaron Bike Trail Bridge. When this work is taking place, the contractor will close the northbound lane closest to the curb. Please be aware of traffic barrels and warning signs in this area.
  • There may also be clean-up and minor items that will require the contractor’s attention in this section of the road where only a portion of a lane may need to be closed for a short period of time. Once again, until all work is completed, your cooperation is appreciated and will speed the completion of the contractor’s work.

On Wednesday, August 25, when S. 60th Street is opened to the north, the contractor will be closing the intersection of Greenfield Ave and S. 60th Street to traffic to complete the work in this area. It is anticipated that the work in this area will take six to eight weeks with the contractor anticipating completion by October 18. A detour will be posted for this section of work starting on Wednesday morning, August 25.

During the completion of the work in the intersection of S. 60th St. and Greenfield Ave., access to Maas Petroleum should be made via S. 60th St. from the intersection of National and S. 60th St. This section of S. 60th Street will be open only to patrons of Maas Petroleum, and there will be no access available beyond Maas Petroleum.

Please do not attempt to travel through the work zone at the intersection of Greenfield and S. 60th St. for your safety and the safety of the construction crews. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as it will make for a safer project and will allow the contractor to finish his work in a timely manner.

If you have questions or concerns regarding these activities or any other aspects of the project, please contact us at the project field office or via e-mail.
