Work on the project began in earnest this week. Traffic patterns have been changed with both eastbound and westbound traffic using the northern section of Janesville Road.
This week the contractor has been doing preliminary grading work, which included removal of the existing asphalt driving surface on the south half of the roadway. The contractor has also been moving topsoil out of the grading area so that it may be reused and has also started on the removal of some of the existing concrete pavement that was under the roadway.
During the week of May 7 (weather permitting), the contractor will begin grading for the new section of roadway on the south half of Janesville Road. Please be aware of construction vehicles entering and leaving the work zone when driving on Janesville Road from Moorland Road to Lannon Road. This grading will involve the contractor removing the existing roadway to a depth of four to six feet below the north half of the road. Please be aware of this fact when traveling on Janesville Road as there will be no shoulder for vehicles traveling eastbound from Lannon Road to Moorland Road to use. If for any reason you need to stop while traveling eastbound, you must travel to an intersection, get off of Janesville Road and travel to a cross street or parking lot to stop.
The contractor is also anticipating that they will be removing the right turn lane for vehicles traveling south on Moorland Road and wanting to turn on Janesville Road to proceed west. This turn lane is being removed to allow for the construction of a longer turn lane that will allow for a better flow of traffic through the Moorland Road and Janesville Road intersection. The contractor is anticipating that the removal and rebuilding of this turn lane should be completed within approximately four weeks.
During the week of May 15 the contractor is anticipating that they will be continuing on the grading work for the south side of Janesville Road and that they will be starting on the installation of a new storm sewer system on the south side of the roadway.
Once again, we ask that you exercise caution while driving through the site and remain aware of the activities that will be occurring on a daily basis. Thank you in advance for your understanding of the delays that may occur as you travel through the construction zone.
The contractor will make every effort to minimize the noise, dust and confusion that is taking place. However, please remember that Janesville Road is an active construction site and that in order to complete the work scheduled for this year, there will be some noise, dust and confusion.
The R.A. Smith National construction field office has been established. Please note that regular office hours will not be scheduled as the staff will be on the project site a majority of the time. The field office is located at S73W16582 Janesville Road; the field office telephone number is (414) 422-4751. Please feel free to contact Mr. Mike Mentzel at mike.mentzel@rasmithnational.com or by phone at 262-317-3338 with questions or concerns that you have. April 20, 2012
Construction activities on the project began during the week of April 16. Removal of trees has been completed. Installation of erosion control measures necessary to protect area lakes, streams and wetlands from damage due to the construction project has begun. In addition, the contractor will be installing temporary mailboxes for all residents and businesses located in the workzone. The mailbox relocation has been coordinated with the Muskego Post Office and delivery of the new mailboxes will begin on Monday, April 23.
The installation of the underground infrastructure necessary for the relocation of the AT&T telephone lines and fiber optic cables was completed during the week of April 16. Representatives of AT&T have informed the project staff that they anticipate completing the transfer of service from the old system to the recently completed system within the next two weeks. The work by AT&T will not impact the reconstruction work on Janesville Road.
On Monday, April 23 (weather permitting), activity on the road work will increase dramatically. During the week the contractor will be working near the intersection of Janesville Road (CTH “L”) and Moorland Road (CTH “O”) where they will be removing a portion of the median island and replacing it with asphalt. This work is necessary to allow for the switching of traffic required for the construction of Janesville Road. During the week of April 23 the contractors will also be installing a temporary traffic lane on the north side of Janesville Road. This lane will be used to allow for both east and westbound traffic during the reconstruction of the south (eastbound) side of Janesville Road. Work on this temporary traffic lane is anticipated to be completed by mid-week.
Once the temporary traffic lane is completed, the contractor will finish the installation of the temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Janesville Road and Bay Lane. The contractor has tentatively scheduled the activation of these signals for April 25.
Upon completion of the temporary traffic lane and traffic signals at Janesville Road and Bay Lane, the contractor will be switching traffic on Janesville Road. The traffic will be switched from its present configuration to the construction configuration with both eastbound and westbound traffic located on the north half of the roadway. This switch is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, April 25, or Thursday, April 26. Please watch for traffic barrels and barricades that will direct you to this new configuration.
Once traffic is switched to the north half of Janesville Road, the actual construction of the south half of the road will begin. Once this work begins, please exercise extra caution when driving on Janesville Road as there will be a significant increase in construction traffic.
The R.A. Smith National construction field office has been established. Please note that regular office hours will not be scheduled as the staff will be on the project site a majority of the time. The field office is located at S73W16582 Janesville Rd.; the field office telephone number is (414) 422-4751. Please feel free to contact Mr. Mike Mentzel at mike.mentzel@rasmithnational.com, or by phone at 262-317-3338 with questions or concerns that you have. March 30, 2012
On Thursday, March 29, a preconstruction meeting for the CTH L (Janesville Rd.) project was held with Musson Brothers, Inc. (the prime contractor) and the various subcontractors to discuss the issues involved in the construction of the project.
At the meeting the contractor presented a tentative construction schedule to representatives of Waukesha County, the City of Muskego and R.A. Smith National, Inc. The reconstruction of CTH “L” (Janesville Road) is tentatively scheduled to begin April 16, 2012. Please note that as with most of the dates that will be detailed in this update and all future updates, April 16 is a tentative date that may be affected by weather, contractors’ planning and production schedules being incorrect, or any of a myriad of other situations. Once the actual construction start date is finalized by the contractor, they will place message boards at the east and west ends of the project one week prior to starting work, informing you of the actual start date.
Please watch for the installation of the message boards with the actual start date.
The first activity that the contractor will be working on is the installation of a temporary widening lane to allow for traffic to be moved to the north side of CTH L so that construction can start on the eastbound lanes of the roadway. In addition to the widening of the roadway, the contractor will also be on site working on the clearing and grubbing of the trees that will need to be removed for the project.
During the week of April 9, R.A. Smith National staff will be on site beginning to layout the location of the widening lanes, marking driveway and side street reconstruction limits and identifying the limits of the clearing and grubbing that will be required.
Due to a problem that occurred with the relocation of the AT&T lines on Janesville Road and Glen Cove Court, the installation of the temporary traffic signals at this intersection will need to be installed prior to the April 16 start date. This work is anticipated to start April 4 or 5. Please exercise caution when driving through this intersection until the work to install the temporary traffic signals is completed. This work should not adversely affect traffic on CTH L.
The R.A. Smith National construction field office will be established during the week of April 9. Please note that regular office hours will not be scheduled as the staff will be on the project site a majority of the time. The field office will be located at S73W16582 Janesville Rd. The field office telephone number will be (414) 422-4751. Once the field office is established, you may still contact Mr. Mike Mentzel at mike.mentzel@rasmithnational.com or by phone at 262-317-3338 with questions or concerns. You may also contact Mr. Ed Hinrichs of Waukesha County at 262-548-7740 or by e-mail at EHinrichs@waukeshacounty.gov.
March 2, 2012
On Thursday, February 23, 2012, the reconstruction of CTH L (Janesville Rd.) moved one step closer to construction with the opening of bids for the construction of the 2012 work from Moorland Road to Lannon Road. Musson Brothers, Inc. of Brookfield, WI was the low bidder for the work and is currently working with officials from Waukesha County to complete a contract for the construction of the project.
Prior to the opening of bids for the actual road reconstruction work, We Energies and Time Warner have been working throughout the winter on the relocation of the existing gas, electric and cable television utilities. Work on the relocation of these utilities is nearing completion and will be completed prior to the start of the reconstruction of CTH L.
Work is also proceeding on the relocation of the AT&T communication utilities located within the 2012 CTH L work zone. This work is ongoing and is anticipated to be completed at the end of April.
Over the next several weeks representatives of Waukesha County, Musson Brothers and R.A. Smith National will be meeting to prepare for the task of reconstructing CTH L. One of the first items to be completed will be the approval of a tentative schedule for the reconstruction work on CTH L. When this schedule has been reviewed and approved it will be posted to this site.
As construction activities begin to pick up, please continue to check this site for updates on project activities.
Prior to the start of construction, the R.A. Smith National construction management staff will be establishing a construction field office at the project site. Once that field office is in place, we will post the location and field office telephone number on this website for your use. Until the field office is established, you may still contact Mr. Mike Mentzel of R.A. Smith National, Inc. at mike.mentzel@rasmithnational.com or by phone at 262-317-3338 with questions or concerns that you may have concerning the project, or Mr. Ed Hinrichs of Waukesha County at 262-548-7740 or by e-mail at EHinrichs@waukeshacounty.gov.
