Rotational Training Program is Building Leaders at R.A. Smith National

by Lindsie Nelson 25. June 2013 05:03

R.A. Smith National — civil engineering, surveying, landscape architecture, geographic information systems (GIS), visualization and 3D laser scanning consultants — has implemented a rotational training program for the purpose of educating and training young professionals in various practice groups throughout the company. The program is intended to develop future leaders with an all-encompassing knowledge of the firm and the civil engineering field.

The program consists of five, two-month cycles that will include rotations in the municipal, construction services, survey, land development and transportation divisions. The goal is that after working in each division, individuals will have a well-rounded understanding of the services provided and how they interrelate. At the end of the rotational training program, the individual will move into a permanent position in one of these practice groups.

Colby Nennig is the first employee to be hired as part of the company’s rotational training program. Colby said, “The opportunity for growth and advancement was what made me decide the rotational training program was the best fit for me.” Colby holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Marquette University with an interest in transportation. His experiences include interning for both a local materials testing firm and the DeKalb Sanitary District. Colby is a native of Howards Grove, Wis. and currently resides in Milwaukee, Wis.

The rotational training program was an idea developed by John Kastner, P.E., a project engineer in R.A. Smith National’s construction services department. Kastner developed the concept because he saw the need for young professionals to understand the relationship between construction and design in the engineering industry.  “Colby was a stand-out among the numerous applicants from all across the country,” Kastner explained.

Darline Hoffins, director of human resources, stated “R.A. Smith National is excited to introduce the new rotational training program. This will be an important tool in training and growing our next generation of leaders.”
