Petrifying Springs Park Wins Design Excellence Award

by Lindsie Nelson 21. November 2013 10:22

The Petrifying Springs Park, dam removal and bridge construction project in Kenosha County, Wis., has received an “Excellence in Project Design or Implementation” award from the Wisconsin Association for Floodplain, Stormwater and Coastal Management (WAFSCM). The project team, which included Kenosha County Department of Public Works, R.A. Smith National and Westbrook Associated Engineers, received the award at the 2013 WAFSCM conference in Neenah, Wis.

This award-winning project entailed removing an earthen dam that was crossed by a park road and an associated footbridge on the Pike River in Kenosha County's Petrifying Springs Park. The dam was an impediment to fish passage and overflowed numerous times each year. One of the unique issues that ignited this project was that the Pike River is one of only two rivers in southeast Wisconsin that support seasonal fish migrations.

Removing the Petrifying Springs dam and replacing it with a bridge removed the last physical fish passage barrier in the Pike River watershed. This allowed 22 miles of stream to reach above the dam, making it accessible to the migratory fish species. Removal of the dam enabled the movement of hundreds of other aquatic species to improve the overall ecological health of the river system.

WAFSCM annually recognizes one project with the Excellence in Project Design or Implementation award. The association promotes the common interest in floodplain, stormwater, and coastal management, to enhance cooperation between the various related private, local, regional, state, and federal agencies; and encourages and ensures effective, new and innovate approaches to managing the state’s floodplain, stormwater, and coastal systems.

ICSC Centerbuild: The Premier Retail Design & Construction Conference

by Lindsie Nelson 20. November 2013 03:09

ICSC CenterBuild 2013
J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Phoenix, AZ
December 4-6, 2013

Steve Miazga of R.A. Smith National is the chairman for the 2013 ICSC Centerbuild Conference, being held in Phoenix, Arizona, December 4-6. Jon Chapman, 3D laser scanning manager, and Clif Poynter, national client manager, will also be hosting roundtables at the event. Jon will host a discussion on the use of 3D laser scanning for reality capture of existing retail spaces for use in redesign or redevelopment processes. The intended focus of this discussion will be to understand how and why an accurate as-built BIM model of an existing retail space can save time and money.

Clif will be discussing alternative methods to track and retain critical pieces of project data such as maintenance requirements, manuals, contractor information, maps, plans and surveys after construction is complete. Each project has the risk of critical information being lost during the transition of design and construction to the day-to-day operations; however, there are proactive ways to ensure information is not lost.

The ICSC CenterBuild Conference brings together professionals from all around the world to discover more about the retail industry and create lifelong connections. CenterBuild has become the "must attend" event for leading retail professionals; including developers, retailers, design professionals and general contractors. For more information about the conference and how to register visit http://www.icsc.org/events-and-programs/details/centerbuild-conference/
