R.A. Smith National Wins Engineering Excellence Awards for Drexel Avenue and Oakbrook Center

by Lindsie Nelson 18. February 2014 07:55

R.A. Smith National – a multi-disciplined civil engineering and surveying firm – Brookfield, Wis., has received a 2014 Best in State Award for Drexel Avenue and a State Finalist Award for Oakbrook Center from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Wisconsin.

The award-winning reconstruction of Drexel Avenue in the city of Oak Creek, Wis. involved upgrading nearly one mile of roadway from a two-lane rural to a four-lane urban cross section with a median and turn lanes. An innovative aspect of this project, that became a “first-of-its-kind” use in Wisconsin, was the design and installation of a Rammed Aggregate Pier® (RAP) system to stabilize organic soils through the wetland area. The final design included the installation of 3,600 RAPs through the wetland section.

The Oakbrook Center project involved the use of 3D laser scanning to collect data for the renovation of this 135-acre, three-story, open-air shopping center in the Chicago area (Oak Brook, Ill.). 3D laser scanning was used to capture very accurate, detailed data in highly congested and complex areas in a short period of time. Site design and conventional survey services were also provided to GGP (General Growth Properties). Omniplan Architects was the architect for the project.

Each year ACEC Wisconsin awards top projects for their high level of quality and client satisfaction. The award ceremony will be held March 21 at the American Club in Kohler. For more information visit
