R.A. Smith National has been retained by the City of Brookfield to provide design services for the reconstruction of Calhoun Road from just north of County M (North Avenue) to just south of WIS 190 (Capitol Drive). R.A. Smith National is providing transportation design, traffic engineering, surveying, stormwater management and ecological services for the Calhoun Road project.
The approximately two-mile stretch of Calhoun Road is being reconstructed to address deteriorated pavement, current and future traffic volumes, poor sight distances, and a rough Canadian Pacific Railroad crossing. The surrounding land use consists mainly of single-family residential properties with commercial properties at either end and between two railroad crossings. Fairview South School, Victory International Fellowship Church, and the Sikh Religious Society of Wisconsin also border the project.
The Calhoun Road corridor serves as a critical link for the traveling public as a north-south arterial in the center of Brookfield. The improvements to this segment of Calhoun will complement, and add to the continuity of, other portions of the Calhoun Road corridor that have previously been reconstructed. R.A. Smith National also designed the 1.3-mile reconstruction of Calhoun from WIS 59 (Greenfield Avenue) to US 18 (Bluemound Road) under I-94, including the replacement of the I-94 bridges over Calhoun Road. The project was constructed in 2008 and 2009.

Pat Hawley, P.E., PTOE, transportation senior project manager of R.A. Smith National, presented at the recent American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Wisconsin’s 2017 Transportation Improvement Conference. Hawley discussed reasonable access, an assessment of legal issues associated with driveway impacts along public roadways. During the presentation, conference attendees were provided with an overview of a property owner’s rights and WisDOT’s legal rights. Additionally, several examples of court rulings related to driveway impacts in Wisconsin were shown. Mike Roach, WisDOT statewide access management coordinator, co-presented.
