The 2013 Engineers Without Borders’ Golf Outing will be held at the Edgewood Golf Course. R.A. Smith National will be sponsoring, donating raffle items and attending this event that helps to fund the Wisconsin chapter of Engineers Without Borders. This nonprofit partners with disadvantaged communities around the world to improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects, while developing internationally responsible engineering students.

R.A. Smith National is First in Wisconsin to Get “Up to Speed” on Latest Laser Scanning Technology

One million points per second at a range of up to nearly 400 feet. That’s the power behind the new Leica ScanStation P20 laser scanner that R.A. Smith National is the first in Wisconsin to own. The P20 will be added to R.A. Smith National’s current scanning operations, which also includes the Leica HDS 7000 phase-based scanner. 

Laser scanning is an integral part of R.A. Smith National’s survey operations as the technology is very useful in creating highly accurate as-builts. The technology is further beneficial in providing data support for BIM (building information modeling) processes. The laser scanning team at R.A. Smith National’s Brookfield, Wis. and Tarentum (Pittsburgh), Pa. offices has provided laser scanning services on numerous projects nationwide. Richard Smith, president and owner of R.A. Smith National said, “We are pleased to be at the forefront of using the latest 3D laser scanning technology to better serve our clients.”

Several features differentiate the P20 scanner from its predecessors. The new P20 scanner is the first to integrate the range of a time-of-flight scanner with the speed of a phase-based scanner. The P20 can scan up to one million points per second, which is 20 times faster than the 50,000 points that earlier generation time-of-flight scanners were able to collect. The P20 is also able to manage temperatures ranging from 4°F to 122°F, allowing for greater flexibility in scanning environments. Another new feature is an industry-first “check and adjust” capability.  Users are able to check the accuracy of the device electronically and adjust parameters to ensure the highest level of performance, without having to send the scanner to the factory or service center. 

R.A. Smith National has provided laser scanning for a variety of projects in commercial/retail, health care, education, transportation, government, industrial, recreation and more. Recent projects include the Oakbrook Center regional shopping destination (Oakbrook, Illinois); Veteran’s Administration Hospital Campus Courtyard (Tomah, Wis.); Chick fil-A (Ashland, Kentucky); Allegheny Commons Park pedestrian bridge renovation (Pittsburgh, Pa.); St. Mary’s Hospital (Madison, Wis.) and many others.

Jon Chapman of R.A. Smith National’s Brookfield, Wis. headquarters and Pete Brothers, P.L.S. of the Tarentum (Pittsburgh) office co-lead the firm’s 3D laser scanning efforts. Chapman said, “It has been amazing to watch the changes that have evolved in the scanning industry over the last 15 years. The new P20 provides the best of both worlds in laser scanning – the range of a time-of-flight scanner and the speed of a phase-based scanner. Having these capabilities in one instrument provides a powerful advantage.”
