R.A. Smith National Named a “2015 Best Firms to Work For” in the Nation by Zweig Group

R.A. Smith National, Inc. — a nationwide, multi-disciplined civil and structural engineering and surveying firm — is excited to announce that for the third consecutive year the firm has been selected as one of Zweig Group’s Best Civil Engineering Firms to Work For.

The firm ranked No. 16 out of 46 on the civil engineering list. This list recognizes the top civil engineering firms in the United States and Canada based on their workplace practices, employee benefits, employee retention rates and more. R.A. Smith National has been recognized seven times as a Best Firms to Work For by Zweig Group.

Employee Feedback Reflects Firm’s Culture
Employees at industry firms were surveyed by Zweig Group in order to produce their Best Firms to Work For lists. Based on survey results of R.A. Smith National employees, a majority believe that the firm is client focused and the culture is team oriented and collaborative, integrity focused, and has a family atmosphere. Furthermore, 100% of employees noted that the firm is ethical in its business practices and that recognition is received for excellent work.

Throughout the year, R.A. Smith National hosts lunches for events such as football games, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween and Christmas, as well as a grand holiday celebration. Staff members also come together to celebrate life’s events and volunteer at events such as The Gathering, Feed My Starving Children and Adopt-a-Highway.

Record Growth in 2015
Since January 2015, the firm has hired 34 new staff, which is a record pace that will match or exceed the number of new hires in previous years. R.A. Smith National now employs a staff of 195 with offices in Brookfield (corporate headquarters), Madison and Appleton, Wis.; Naperville (Chicago), Ill.; Orange County (Los Angeles), Calif.; and Oakmont (Pittsburgh), Pa.

R.A. Smith National is a consulting engineering firm, providing multi-disciplinary services to government and the land development industry nationwide. In the fall of 2014, the firm added structural engineering and nationwide development management services. R.A. Smith National has also increased its federal project portfolio. Comprehensive services also include civil engineering, surveying, construction services, transportation engineering, ecological services, landscape architecture, irrigation design, water resource engineering, geographic information systems (GIS), visualization and 3D laser scanning.

Severson Completes ACEC WI Future Leaders Institute

Congratulations to Brad Severson, P.E., transportation project manager in R.A. Smith National’s Appleton office! Severson recently completed the Future Leaders Institute leadership and career development series offered by the American Council of Engineering Companies-Wisconsin chapter

The ACEC Future Leaders Institute is a program focused on developing professionals and preparing individuals to be successful in future project management and principal positions. Concentrating on the non-technical aspects of engineering, the Institute promotes relationship building,
goal setting and action planning. A wide array of design professionals in Wisconsin can participate in the program, including those with engineering, architectural, historical,
planning and surveyor backgrounds. Learn more about the Future Leaders Institute.

“Leading up to the start of the program, past attendees felt I would really enjoy the program and explained how much they benefited from attending the Future Leaders Institute,” said Severson. “The program far exceeded those lofty expectations.  There are numerous aspects from each session that I will be able to apply daily to improve both my personal and professional life.”

ACEC WI honored all participants during a graduation ceremony for the Class of 2015. The ceremony took place during the organization’s annual meeting on May 21, 2015, at Discovery World in Milwaukee.
