BROOKFIELD, Wis. — R.A. Smith National – a multi-disciplined civil engineering and surveying firm – Brookfield, Wis., is the recipient of a 2011 Best of State Engineering Excellence award from The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Wisconsin for the design of five closely-spaced roundabouts at State Highway 145 in the village of Richfield, Washington County, Wisconsin. The award will be presented to R.A. Smith National at an awards banquet on March 25 at The American Club in Kohler, Wis.

R.A. Smith National, Inc. was retained by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) for the design of five, closely-spaced roundabouts on STH 145 from USH 41 to USH 45, a 0.6-mile corridor that included interchanges over two major U.S. highways. “The number and concentration of roundabouts designed make this a unique roundabout project and one of the largest in Wisconsin to date,” said Christine K. Rawson, WisDOT Southeast Region project manager. “The complexity and the number of challenges in designing a system of five roundabouts in less than six tenths of a mile were significant, particularly since at the time, roundabouts were a new and innovative design element.” The project was designed, constructed, and open to traffic under a three-year compressed schedule (November 2006 to November 2009).
