Barker Road Roundabout BROOKFIELD, WIS. - The CTH Y (Barker Road) and CTH M (North Avenue) roundabout, Brookfield, Wisconsin, was recently selected as a 2010 Top Project by “The Daily Reporter” and “Wisconsin Builder.” The new multi-lane roundabout vastly improved one of Waukesha County’s top 10 most dangerous and severely congested intersections. R.A.Smith National – a multi-disciplined civil engineering and surveying firm – Brookfield, Wis., provided construction services, traffic engineering and landscape architectural design services. One Source Consulting provided design engineering. MTJ Roundabout Engineering provided capacity analysis, horizontal design and design review services through 60-90% plan development; field inspection; and layout assistance for pavement markings.

R.A. Smith National also provided professional services for two other Top Project award winners including Madison Children’s Museum (provided landscape architectural design and civil engineering) and Marquette University Law School (provided civil engineering and surveying). An awards ceremony honoring these and other Wisconsin construction projects will be held on May 25 at the Country Springs Hotel, Pewaukee, Wis.

R.A. Smith National Wins Excellence in Highway Design Award from the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation for STH 145 Roundabouts

BROOKFIELD, WIS. – R.A.Smith National – a multi-disciplined civil engineering and surveying firm – Brookfield, Wis., has received an Excellence in Highway Design award from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) for the design of a series of five roundabouts at State Highway145 in the village of Richfield, Washington County, Wisconsin. R.A. Smith National also received a Best of State Engineering Excellence Award recently from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Wisconsin for the STH 145 project.

R.A. Smith National was retained by WisDOT for the design of five, closely-spaced roundabouts on STH145 from USH 41 to USH 45, a 0.6-mile corridor that included interchanges over two major U.S. highways. “The number and concentration of roundabouts designed make this a unique roundabout project and one of the largest in Wisconsin to date,” said Christine K. Rawson, WisDOT Southeast Region project manager. “The complexity and the number of challenges in designing a system of five roundabouts in less than six tenths of a mile were significant, particularly since at the time, roundabouts were a new and innovative design element.”

R.A. Smith National was retained by WisDOT to design improvements to STH 145 to handle the anticipated increase in traffic volumes from 6,000 vehicles per day to nearly 18,000 vehicles per day. The anticipated increase in traffic volumes was based on the recently constructed Cabela’s store, associated outlot parcels and future commercial development. The project was designed, constructed, and open to traffic under a three-year compressed schedule (November 2006 to November 2009).
