BROOKFIELD, WIS. – R.A.Smith National – a multi-disciplined civil engineering and surveying firm – Brookfield, Wis., has received an Excellence in Highway Design award from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) for the design of a series of five roundabouts at State Highway145 in the village of Richfield, Washington County, Wisconsin. R.A. Smith National also received a Best of State Engineering Excellence Award recently from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Wisconsin for the STH 145 project.
R.A. Smith National was retained by WisDOT for the design of five, closely-spaced roundabouts on STH145 from USH 41 to USH 45, a 0.6-mile corridor that included interchanges over two major U.S. highways. “The number and concentration of roundabouts designed make this a unique roundabout project and one of the largest in Wisconsin to date,” said Christine K. Rawson, WisDOT Southeast Region project manager. “The complexity and the number of challenges in designing a system of five roundabouts in less than six tenths of a mile were significant, particularly since at the time, roundabouts were a new and innovative design element.”
R.A. Smith National was retained by WisDOT to design improvements to STH 145 to handle the anticipated increase in traffic volumes from 6,000 vehicles per day to nearly 18,000 vehicles per day. The anticipated increase in traffic volumes was based on the recently constructed Cabela’s store, associated outlot parcels and future commercial development. The project was designed, constructed, and open to traffic under a three-year compressed schedule (November 2006 to November 2009).
