Joseph Diekfuss, Ph.D. has joined R.A. Smith National – a multi-disciplined civil engineering and surveying firm – Brookfield, Wis., as a structural engineer.

Joe’s education and expertise in structural engineering will add to the capabilities of R.A. Smith National’s structural division. He has a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville. After achieving his bachelor’s degree, Joe earned both his master of science (2010) and doctoral (2013) degrees in civil engineering (structures) from Marquette University.

Joe brings four years of expertise as a research assistant at Marquette University. While at Marquette, Joe conducted research which led to the development of a reliability-based fatigue assessment procedure for prescribing inspection intervals for Wisconsin’s inventory of sign support structures.

Prior to earning his graduate degrees, Joe was first a co-op and then a project engineer for R.A. Smith National. During that time, Joe helped design/draft bridge plans for several WisDOT deck overlay and replacement projects, provided on-site inspection services for the construction of a prestressed concrete girder bridge (CTH ES over CTH Y) in New Berlin, Wis. and coordinated infrastructure reconstruction/rehabilitation projects for several other communities in southeastern Wis. including Greendale, Muskego, New Berlin, and West Milwaukee.

Joe currently resides in Muskego, Wisconsin.
