R.A. Smith National is one of Wisconsin’s leading civil engineering, planning, surveying, landscape architecture, geographic information systems (GIS) and 3D visualization consulting firms.
Established in 1978 by owner and president Richard A. Smith, R.A. Smith National has more than 30 years of in-depth, multi-disciplinary experience in both the public and private sectors.
Offices are located in Brookfield, Wis., our corporate home; Appleton and Oshkosh, Wis.; and Tarentum (Pittsburgh), Pa.
The company changed its name from R.A. Smith & Associates and its National Survey & Engineering division to R.A. Smith National, effective March 17, 2008.

Corporate History:
- 1978, Richard A. Smith founded R.A. Smith & Associates, Inc.
- 1994, acquired National Survey & Engineering (established in 1929) in order to expand its services to the land development market.
- 1998, opened branch office in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
- 1999, broadened service capabilities to include 3D visualization services.
- 2000, acquired Oshkosh-based Roehlig Land Surveying & Consulting, (established in 1990).
- 2003, added traffic analysis, traffic engineering, and comprehensive planning services.
- 2004, added landscape architecture services.
- 2004, opened office in Pittsburgh (Tarentum), Pennsylvania, through National Survey & Engineering division.
- 2005, opened office in Appleton, Wisconsin, through National Survey & Engineering division.
- 2006, acquired R.D. Whitling & Associates survey firm in Murrysville, Pa.
- 2006, acquired Community Engineering Consultants, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 2008, changed corporate name to R.A. Smith National.
