Ozaukee Humane Society Victoria Wellens Center - Ozaukee County, Wisconsin

Ozaukee Humane Society Victoria Wellens Center - Ozaukee County, WisconsinR.A. Smith National provided land surveying, civil engineering and landscape architectural services to The Kubala Washatko Architects (TKWA) for a new Ozaukee Humane Society facility that is named the Victoria Wellens Center. The new facility will be located in the village of Saukville, Wisconsin, along Highway 33 in the Dekora Woods Business Park.

R.A. Smith National used innovative design principles to layout the building and site improvements in a manner that took advantage of a scenic viewshed across a large wetland area and that would not conflict with existing constraints, including Highway 33 right-of-way, underground and overhead utility lines and established drainage patterns.

The site is long and narrow which presented several site planning, parking and grading challenges once the building location was situated. Due to the function and purpose of the facility, the landscape was minimized to allow for outdoor use with the animals while blending in with the natural surroundings.

R.A.Smith National also provided assistance in working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to obtain approval and the necessary permits for the construction of an agility area and walking paths throughout the wetlands for animal exercising purposes.

The 21,000 square foot building also provides an adoption program for homeless animals, animal medical care facilities, a volunteer program, and manners classes for dogs. In addition, a number of educational programs for children and adults are offered that are designed to teach respect and care for animals and end neglect and abuse. The Center has a staff of approximately 17 and a volunteer corps of nearly 100 individuals.
