Custom GIS Applications - Village of Round Lake Beach, Illinois

Building Inspection ArcIMS Custom ApplicationCustom GIS Applications - Village of Round Lake Beach, Illinois

A custom application tool was developed using ArcIMS to cost-effectively streamline the building permit process from start to finish for the Village’s Building Inspection Division. The custom application accomplishes several things:

  • Maintains the Village’s many different types of permits from application through construction and occupancy
  • Provides automatic alerts of field inspection dates, responsibilities, mailings, follow-ups and more
  • Streamlines the current process of retrieving and archiving hard copy files
  • Eliminates the cumbersome use of Microsoft Word and Excel to inform staff of daily duties
  • Enables management to view and analyze parcel-based permit progressions from their computer workstations for reporting purposes
  • Implements a paperless system that frees up office space and saves staff time
  • Serves as a backup in case of a fire or other property damage
  • Eliminates future expenses of software, hardware, software maintenance agreements and training
  • Takes advantage of previous and current efforts to begin using ArcIMS

Police Department ArcIMS Custom Application

Cracking down on crime isn’t easy, but GIS can help. The police department at the Village of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, was looking for a tool to more effectively track criminal activities as part of its recent adoption of a “Crime-Free Multi-Housing Program.”

Prior to the implementation of the “Crime-Free Multi-Housing” program, the police department was using several software applications to track criminal activities. A creative solution for managing the “Crime Free Multi-Housing” program was found in using and building on the Village’s existing ArcIMS. The new application will provide several capabilities and distinct advantages over the previous system:

  • Exclusive login rights for the Village’s ArcIMS application will allow police department staff to display the “Crime-Free Multi-Housing” application and its tools, not for use by other Village staff.
  • Custom screen interfaces to view current filtered rental nuisance activities data directly from the department’s records management databases.
  • Predetermined queries will be selected based on current needs, including the ability to generate printable reports; color code land-base parcels within ArcIMS; and maps for visual interpretations.
  • ArcIMS will be used to view live rental property layer information that is managed by the Village Building Inspection Division.
