Chippewa Nature Center - Midland, Michigan

Chippewa Nature Center - Midland, MIThe project involved renovation of an existing visitor center, construction of a new nature preschool, and rehabilitation of an existing parking lot. R.A. Smith National provided low-impact design services, including entrance and parking lot reconfiguration, playgrounds for the new nature preschool, a water feature pond at the entrance, and a large bio-retention area that included native plant colonies for the treatment of parking lot runoff.

Challenges/Solutions

The project site sat along the banks of the Chippewa and Pine Rivers, surrounded by mature woodlands and wetlands. R.A. Smith National’s civil engineers and landscape architects worked together to re-design the parking lot to direct runoff into a large bio-retention area for improved water quality of the "first flush." Plantings native to Michigan were researched and selected to restore vegetation to disturbed areas of the site. Large existing trees were preserved.
