Oakbrook Center Renovation - Oakbrook, Illinois

A complex array of existing features made it difficult to use conventional surveying alone to create the needed data for renovation of the three–story Oakbrook Center, a major regional shopping destination in Illinois. R.A. Smith National turned to its 3D laser scanning, conventional surveying and site design expertise to create data to allow a very dynamic design process.

For the interior, open-air portion of the mall, 3D laser scanning was used to collect data very quickly for the complex array of existing features. Topographic maps of the entire mall, which were constructed in part by extracting these features from the scan data, provided the basis to expedite the design process.

TruView (an immersive point cloud viewing application) data sets were also provided to the entire project design team, which enabled designers to interactively navigate through the scan data, and use the basic measurement and markup tools to access additional dimensionally accurate as-built information without having to revisit the site. Greater data accessibility resulted in expanded design capabilities.
