UW Madison Power Plant Accident Investigation - Madison, Wisconsin
R.A. Smith National provided 3D laser scanning services as part of an accident investigation at the University of Wisconsin, Madison power plant.
An operation involving an overhead hoist and a forklift resulted in an accident where a portion of a turbine in one of the chiller bays was damaged when the load, which was a man lift, unexpectedly fell.
R.A. Smith National was hired by a forensic engineering consultant to conduct a 3D laser scan of the accident scene. The scan data was subsequently used by the forensic engineer and the insurance companies in trying to determine who was at fault for the damages incurred.
Timing played a very critical role in this project as the scene needed to be scanned before crews could begin any clean up and repair work. R.A. Smith National was able to mobilize and be on site the day after first contact was made.
