Washington Street Traffic Counts & Signal Optimization - West Bend, Wisconsin
R.A. Smith National developed coordinated traffic signal timing plans for 14 intersections within the City’s Washington Street traffic signal system and evaluated traffic control alternatives at two intersections. Prior to this project, the timings on this system were last reviewed in 2012 and the latest traffic counts were conducted in 2013. With changes in traffic characteristics throughout the system, traffic signal timings needed updating.
The project team analyzed the existing intersection conditions to determine required geometric and signal timing improvements to achieve acceptable level of service and minimize delay. Weekday morning, weekday evening and Saturday peak-period traffic count data and vehicle classification information were collected for the signal optimization using Miovision camera technology. Thirteen-hour weekday traffic counts were collected at the Washington Street intersections with the Westwood Mall driveway and University Drive for the traffic control evaluation. The project team used the traffic count data to analyze the corridor, develop updated traffic signal timing plans and review traffic signal warrants. A progression analysis was performed to compare the effectiveness of existing and proposed timing plans. The recommended timing plans were provided to the City’s contractor for field implementation.
