Previous Construction Updates

November 25, 2008

1Calhoun Road and all side road access opened to the public on Friday, November 28. Two lanes are open in each direction between Bluemound Road and Deer Park Drive and between Greenfield Avenue and Robinwood Street. Traffic is narrowed to one lane in each direction for passing beneath IH 94. There may be some activity off the roadway, but major construction is shut down until March 1. Sidewalks remain closed because they are incomplete.

Westbound and Eastbound IH 94 returned to their normal patterns on Thursday, November 13. The westbound lanes are riding on new pavement and bridge. The widened shoulders that were used to handle additional traffic on the eastbound IH 94 remain in place, but out of service. The crossovers have been closed, and will remain that way until March 1.

2Short term, off roadway activities may take place. Installation of fence along the new retaining walls, application and maintenance of erosion control, refreshing pavement marking, and completion of slopes near Deer Creek are some of the activities that could be expected.

The contractor is expected to install and maintain tubular marker posts and barricades beyond the eastbound IH 94 right shoulder. Refreshment of pavement marking could also be expected.

The field office phone number is 262-797-7903 and is located at 1300 S. Calhoun Road. However, project staff will only be on site periodically. If you have any immediate concerns regarding the activity, please contact the City of Brookfield. Of course, in case of an emergency, please contact the police. We want to thank everyone for their patience this past year and look forward to a successful completion in 2009.3

FALL 2008

imageCalhoun Road remains closed until December 1, 2008.  The roadway contractor has completed curb and gutter and asphalt pavement from Bluemound Road to the new Deer Creek bridges.  Sidewalk, signing, and landscaping have also been completed from Bluemound Road to Ruby Lane.  The future roadway footprint has also been excavated and storm sewer installed from Robinwood Street to Greenfield Avenue.  A new retaining wall has been constructed south of Robinwood Street due to the change in roadway elevation.

The new westbound IH 94 bridge has been erected and some of the new westbound IH 94 pavement and barrier wall is complete.  The traffic crossover that transfers all traffic to the eastbound lanes will remain in place until November 17, 2008

imageCurb and gutter and asphalt pavement will be placed from Robinwood Street to Greenfield Avenue in the upcoming weeks.  Sidewalk, driveways and landscaping will also be addressed as weather will allow in this area and between Ruby Lane and new Deer Creek bridges.  Temporary transitions will be constructed between the new pavement and existing pavement north of IH 94 and south of Judith Lane so that Calhoun Road can be reopened by December 1, 2008.  It will remain open until March 1, 2009, at which time it will be closed for completion of the remaining section between the new Deer Creek bridges and Robinwood Street.

The remaining driving lanes, shoulders and barrier wall of westbound IH 94 will be constructed to match the new bridge and in preparation for next years stage. Pavement marking will be placed and both eastbound and westbound traffic will return to its original location by November 17, 2008.  The crossovers will be barricaded, but not removed because they will be used for transferring traffic to the westbound lanes starting March 1, 2009.

The field office phone number is 262-797-7903 and is located at 1300 S. Calhoun Road.  Any concerns regarding the activity should be directed to the engineering staff.  Of course, in case of an emergency, please contact the police.  We are typically on site between 7am and 5pm, but can make arrangements for meetings outside of those hours.  We recognize the inconvenience that all the residents and commuters are experiencing and appreciate the patience that has been demonstrated.  We also want to emphasize to everyone to continue practicing safe decision making near or in the work zone.

June/July 2008

Calhoun Road was closed on June 2nd, and will remain closed until December 1, 2008.  Utility contractors have still been performing relocations of power and communications lines.  The new installation has been underground.  The roadway contractor has been clearing trees and bushes within the construction area and placing erosion control devices to protect waterways and untouched areas.  They also have started removing the Ruby Farms barn, salvaging material for the historical society.  Removal of the existing pavement has started on the north end.

The median crossovers are being constructed on IH 94, which will direct traffic to one side of the freeway and allow the construction of the new bridges.  The temporary structure has been initiated, which will provide for the 6 lanes of traffic during the crossover.  Foundations for three of the four supports are under way.

Activity will pick up tremendously once the utilities are clear from the proposed work.  The utilities are expected to be complete shortly after the 4th of July.  The temporary bridge on the south side of IH 94 will be constructed.  Another temporary bridge crossing Deer Creek will be constructed (primarily for emergency and construction personnel since there are no residences or businesses between the creek and IH 94), and the new structures over Deer Creek will start construction.  The pavement will continue to be removed; rough roadway grading and additional excavation for storm sewers, watermains and sanitary sewer will take place.  There may be short outages of water service during these connections.  Most of this work will be on the north end, between Bluemound Road and Ruby Lane.

The outside lanes of EB IH 94 will be widened for the additional traffic and match with the temporary structure.  Within that 5 week period, it is expected that all traffic on IH 94 will be shifted via the median crossovers to the EB lanes.  Once traffic is removed, the WB lanes and bridge will be removed for reconstruction.

The construction field office phone number is 262-797-7903 and is located at 1300 S. Calhoun Road.  Any concerns regarding the activity should be directed to the construction engineering staff.
