Travel Around Construction

Calhoun Road: Greenfield Avenue to Bluemound Road
Widening of Calhoun Road from Greenfield Avenue to Bluemound Road has started with road closure to through traffic and initial construction activities getting under way. Calhoun Road will be closed to through traffic from June 2, 2008 through December 1, 2008 and then again from March 1, 2009 through July 1, 2009 as these are the construction times for this project.  The road will be open to local traffic.

Local traffic is defined as someone with an origin or destination within the project limits.  Local traffic does NOT include people who live in the adjacent neighborhoods who want to get to their home in a more convenient manner by driving through the construction project if there are alternate routes through the neighborhood from another street.  Please be mindful of this as the Police Department will issue citations to violators of these rules.

The project requires the north portion of the project (from Swanson School to the north) to complete all four lanes with the first layer of asphalt by time school starts in September 2008 so buses can get into Swanson School on pavement.  The road widening will be completed in summer of 2009.

I-94 bridges over Calhoun Road
Traffic will not be allowed under the I-94 bridges on Calhoun Road except for construction equipment and emergency vehicles.  So if your origin or destination is on the south side of I-94, you will be required to enter/exit from Greenfield Avenue and similarly if you are north of I-94 enter/exit from Bluemound Road.

The best option for motorists is to find alternative routes to their destination.  The City urges motorists to consider using other north-south routes such as Brookfield Road, Barker Road or Springdale Road to the west, or Moorland Road, Highway 100 or US 45 to the east, if at all possible.

The I-94 bridges will include a temporary addition to one of the existing bridges to provide for three lanes in each direction on the freeway while the other bridge is replaced in 2008.  Once traffic is moved over to the new bridge, the other bridge will be replaced, which is scheduled for completion in early summer of 2009.

Bluemound Road Median Modifications

The DOT is already underway constructing median modifications and improvements to driveways from Moorland Road to Barker Road.  This project is intended to improve safety along the corridor and improve traffic signal operation to reduce congestion.  The project is being constructed in one mile increments proceeding east to west.

The City has coordinated its projects (Calhoun Road and I-94 bridge replacement) with the DOT to minimize disruption of traffic but there will be inconveniences because this is still construction of roadway improvements along a very busy state highway.  Your patience is appreciated.
